Did You Know!

Many people know Arizona for the Grand Canyon, but few realize that the state is home to one of the world's best-preserved meteor impact sites: Meteor Crater.

Located about 35 miles west of Winslow, this massive crater was created roughly 50,000 years ago when a meteorite traveling at an estimated 26,000 miles per hour slammed into the Arizona desert. The impact left a crater nearly one mile wide and more than 550 feet deep. Because Arizona's dry climate slowed erosion, Meteor Crater remains remarkably intact, making it one of the most studied impact sites on Earth and even a training location for Apollo astronauts preparing for moon missions.
